About the museum
The museum uses the large car shed that was added in 1903, during the expansion of the Hinterbrühl electric tramway, as a three-track depot for ten new motor cars. After the end of the tramway, the cars remained in the shed for a few more years; later it was used for other purposes, including as a fodder store, and fell into disrepair until the 1980s.
When the 100th anniversary of the line's opening came round in 1983, an exhibition by the district museum commemorated it, and the idea of a dedicated site for historic local transport arose in the town. As a compromise with plans for a park-and-ride facility, the shed was left standing; its rear half was reserved for a museum. From 1987 the project gathered pace, and since the founding of the Mödling City Transport Museum Association in 1988, the association and the municipality have run the museum together.
The association restored the cars on its own initiative and at its own expense. On display are historic tram cars and passenger carriages, an old ÖBB bus, and photos and memorabilia on Mödling's local transport lines. The museum deliberately forgoes high tech: all historic passenger carriages may be entered, and photography is free. Because the tall hall cannot be heated, the museum is open only in the warm season.
