About the museum
The museum is housed in a beguine dwelling from 1660 on the Onder de Linde square, in the Sint-Catharinabegijnhof of Tongeren. That beguinage is one of the thirteen Flemish beguinages protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Together with the church, the beguines formed a women's community within the medieval city walls; in 1257 they were allocated a plot of land near the Jeker and the Moerenpoort.
In the house, which has four levels, the museum shows how the beguines lived. It presents themes, treasures and everyday objects from several centuries. Two highlights are the Sint-Catharina shrine, an oak reliquary with painted saints made specifically for the Tongeren beguinage, and an oak statue of Sint-Anna-ten-Drieën (Saint Anne with Mary and the Christ Child) from the first decades of the sixteenth century. Both form part of the Vlaamse Meesters op hun plek project of Toerisme Vlaanderen.
