About the museum
The Bijenteeltmuseum Kalmthout was founded in 1973 in an old barn on the Heikantstraat. A resident of Kalmthout turned his hobby into his life's work and collected old and unique beekeeping equipment, which soon became known worldwide. From April 1997 the museum had a new, light and modern building next to the visitor centre of the Kalmthoutse Heide, and it grew into one of the largest beekeeping museums in Europe.
Today the municipality of Kalmthout presents the collection of the former Bijenteeltmuseum to the public under the name Bijenexpo “Honingsporen” (“Honey Traces”). The expo shows how people and bees have been intertwined for centuries, from honeycombs and beehives to stories and art.
In a treasure room full of engravings, posters and images, you discover how bees have shaped our nature, culture and traditions. Themes include the life of the bee, the bee as master builder and the beehive, the beekeeper, bee products such as honey and wax, and the enemies of the bee, including the varroa mite and the Asian hornet.
