About the museum

In February 2010 musicologist Hubert Boone offered his life's work, a collection of folk music instruments, to the municipality of Kampenhout. The municipal council decided to invest in it, and so the Brabants Centrum voor Muziektradities (BCM) came into being. Boone had previously worked as a research assistant at the Musical Instruments Museum in Brussels and wrote a great deal about local music history and folk instruments.

The centre was solemnly opened on 4 December 2011 in the Glazen Zaal, with an exhibition on the hommel group of Sint-Martens-Lennik and a folk music performance. It was first housed in Villa Lucie on the village square of Kampenhout, but that space proved too small. The instruments were therefore moved to the cultural and experience centre De Krop, where they are now shown together.

The permanent display contains more than fifty instruments from the Belgian regions: hommels (called “vlier” in Central Brabant), accordions by makers from Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, bagpipes from the revival period after 1955, and wind instruments from older Flemish and Brussels workshops. In addition, the BCM runs a study and documentation centre with about a thousand publications on folk music and a small collection of recordings and photographs of musicians, and it organises changing thematic exhibitions, for example on the bagpipe and the accordion.
