About the museum
The Witloofmuseum was founded in 2004 in Kampenhout, one of the municipalities where witloof has been grown for generations. The museum was first located next to the auction on the Leuvensesteenweg and moved to cultural and experience centre De Krop in the centre of the village after that auction was demolished. Since 2021 the museum has been renewed.
The story begins in Brussels, from where witloof cultivation spread across the fertile soils of the region. It reached its heyday in the 1950s and 1960s: almost every street had a witloof grower. In the 1970s hydroculture arrived, after which the farms grew larger and less labour-intensive. Growers who still cultivate witloof traditionally in the soil are still there today.
The museum lets you follow witloof through the seasons, with attention to history and to facts and curiosities: from the witloof barn to the research lab, and from the field to the auction. Growers of both hydroculture and soil cultivation have their say and explain how they work.
