About the museum
The Egmontkamer is a museum about Lamoraal van Egmont in the former mayor's office, in the town hall on the Markt of Zottegem. The room opened in 2018, in the Egmont year in which the beheading of the count in Brussels 450 years earlier (1568) was commemorated.
Historical objects guide you through the life of the count and his connection with Zottegem. Among them is the painting De onthoofding van Egmont by Fine Stevens from 1968, coin finds, majolica tiles and the original key pieces of the tie beam from the great hall of Egmont Castle. The rediscovery of Lamoraal's grave and the history of Egmont Castle are also covered.
In the adjoining council chamber of the town hall, dating from 1862, a shrine with the split neck vertebra of Lamoraal has stood since 1984. Two paintings referring to Egmont also hang there: Laatste eerbewijzen aan Egmont en Horne by Louis Gallait (1882) and Het kasteel Egmond aan den Hoef by Gillis De Saen (c. 1570). The count's other mortal remains rest in the Egmont crypt beneath the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Hemelvaartkerk.
