About the museum
The Geutelingenmuseum, also called the Ovenmuseum, is in Elst, a district of Brakel. It consists of a brick oven building with two clay ovens, one with an internal firing place and one with an external firing place. The Geutelingen committee of Elst, which has existed since 1981, opened the building as a museum in 1992.
Until the 1930s it was common throughout the Flemish Ardennes to bake geutelingen around Candlemas (2 February). This was done in brick ovens fired with willow wood. In the museum you can see those old ovens in operation, supplemented by a photo exhibition about this edible heritage.
The museum is open only during the geutelingen season, in the winter months. The season ends with the Geutelingen festival weekend around the feast of Saint Apollonia (9 February). After several years elsewhere, since 2025 the committee has once again been active during the season on the grounds behind the butcher's shop De Backer in Elst, where the oven building and the tent also stand.
