About the museum

The Erfgoed Museum Asse, EMA for short, opened its doors on 22 June 2018. It fulfils a long-held wish of the municipality to have its own heritage museum. It is housed in the former secretariat of the cultural centre on the Gemeenteplein, which was converted into a museum on a human scale.

The permanent collection has two parts. The Agilas section presents Roman finds from Asse in an accessible way. The potter Lucius, with an original potter's wheel and a sherd pit, welcomes visitors and invites them to look at the vicus and the excavated Roman heritage.

The Ascania section tells the history of the Oud Gasthuis. The former pharmacy, the tabernacle from the chapel of the Oud Gasthuis, the oldest manuscript and a painting by Willem Offhuys have all returned there. On opening days visitors are welcomed by volunteers from Agilas and Ascania.
