About the museum

The Benedictine abbey of Affligem was founded around 1062 by six knights. Because of its location on the border between the duchy of Brabant and the county of Flanders, it was often destroyed and rebuilt: in the fourteenth century it was destroyed twice, in the seventeenth century troops of Louis XIV set fire to the abbeys and farms, and in 1580 the complex was completely destroyed by Protestants.

The archaeological museum is in the cultural centre next to the abbey. It shows the most important results of many years of excavations in the abbey garden by the Archaeological Working Group Affligem. The display cases hold a lot of pottery: fragments of earthenware pots and bowls, floors and all kinds of tools from the medieval abbey. Remains of the oldest Romanesque stone church can also be seen.

Some objects date from the Carolingian period and come from a settlement that must have existed before the abbey was founded. The museum is free to visit.
