About the museum
The Hof van Peene heritage site is located in the centre of Baasrode, close to the Scheldt. The oldest mention of the lordship of Baasrode dates from 821; the court was originally called Hof ten Basero and received its later name in the fifteenth century, when it came into the hands of the Hallewijn family, lords of Peene. At the end of the sixteenth century the court was destroyed during the Wars of Religion and the Eighty Years' War.
The ruins were later restored as a dwelling, including for the doctor Petrus Van Bavegem, a notable obstetrician who died in 1805. In the nineteenth century a brewery was built behind the townhouse, which remained active until the First World War. In the twentieth century the site fell into decline.
In 2008 the dilapidated townhouse was demolished to make way for a new-build project; medieval remains came to light in the process, which were incorporated as far as possible into the new whole. The industrial buildings behind were restored from 2011 onwards. In 2014 the heritage site was officially presented: the museum shows the site's finds, there is a space for exhibitions by local artists and collectors, the Tuymelaere beer was introduced on the site, and a coffee roastery settled there.
