About the museum
The Scheepvaart- en Visserijmuseum is in Mariekerke, a district of Bornem known as a fishing village on the Scheldt. The museum is devoted to inland shipping and the related fishing, and shows how the skippers lived and worked in the past.
The museum gives an impression of the life and living quarters of the skippers on board. Numerous objects relating to work on the ships and to the equipment of shipyards illustrate this story. The collection also includes scale models of ships. A model from 1651 weighs 750 kilograms, making it the largest in Belgium.
The museum has a café where you can have a drink after the tour. For large groups the museum asks that you book.
