About the museum
The museum is dedicated to Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875-1930), the Antwerp artist who made the harbour and its workers his main subject. He was born in the inn run by his parents on the Van Meterenkaai, studied at the Antwerp academy and later taught drawing there. The museum calls him an artist of the people.
The Stichting Eugeen Van Mieghem was founded in 1982 and has run the museum since its opening on 24 March 1993 in the Korte Riddersstraat. In 1998 it moved to the Beatrijslaan on Linkeroever and in 2010 to the Redershuis on the Ernest Van Dijckkaai. That building was constructed in 1896 for shipping agent Gustave Albrecht to a design by Jos Hertogs and was later restored by the Koninklijke Belgische Redersvereniging (Royal Belgian Shipowners' Association). According to the website, the museum may stay there until March 2030.
The collection comprises about 200 works in various techniques, presented chronologically and partly on loan from private collectors. They show the social and cultural life of Antwerp and Flanders around 1900. During the visit a 32-minute film about the artist plays. The foundation receives no subsidies and runs on contributions from about 1,000 members, volunteers and sponsors.
