About the museum
Museum De Reede opened on 9 June 2017 and is the first Antwerp museum devoted exclusively to graphic art. It shows works on paper: lithographs, engravings, etchings, woodcuts and drawings. Antwerp has a long tradition in printmaking, with names such as Pieter Bruegel the Elder and the printers Plantin and Moretus, and the museum deliberately builds on this.
The museum is housed in the apartment complex “De Rede” on the Ernest van Dijckkaai, a building from 2000 designed by the Antwerp firm Architecten Atelier. The site formerly housed the offices of shipowners who sailed the Rhine and other great rivers. The museum takes its name from this, deliberately chosen in the old spelling.
The collection includes work by artists from seven countries and spans five centuries, from the 17th to the 21st century. Its core consists of a large number of works by three masters of printmaking: Francisco Goya and Félicien Rops, who dissect society, and Edvard Munch, who turns himself inside out. Their work is brought into dialogue with contemporary expressions of society and culture, including in temporary exhibitions.
