About the museum
The Gemeentelijk Museum Gevaert-Minne is housed in the former home of Edgard Gevaert (1891-1965), poet, writer, composer and painter. After his marriage in 1916, Gevaert had the house built to his own design, with a studio with large windows. He was married to Marie Minne, the daughter of sculptor George Minne. As a pacifist, after the Second World War he campaigned for a world government and a world parliament; letters and magazines in the living room still bear witness to this.
The municipality of Sint-Martens-Latem bought the building in 1992 and opened the museum in 1994. In 1996 the house was given the status of protected heritage. After a thorough renovation and extension, the museum reopened in 2012.
The collection shows art from the classic period of the Leie village, with work by, among others, Xavier De Cock, Valerius de Saedeleer, George Minne, Albert Servaes and Leon and Gust De Smet. In the sheepfold the museum organises temporary exhibitions and lectures with a link to Sint-Martens-Latem. Where possible it works together with other museums in the Leie region, and it is part of the network Vlaamse meesters op hun plek.
