About the museum
The municipal Museum Gust De Smet is the last home and studio of the expressionist painter Gust De Smet (1877-1943) in Deurle. After the artist’s death, a bequest obliged the municipality to open the house to the public. The solemn opening took place on 11 June 1950. In 2016, the museum reopened after a thorough renovation.
On the first floor you can see the furnished living room, the studio and the bedroom. On the top floor hang the artist’s paintings, arranged by theme and period. The archive, the personal library and objects from everyday life give an impression of his life and way of working.
The museum is part of the network Vlaamse meesters op hun plek. There is regularly a temporary exhibition, often with loans from other museums, such as works from Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens nearby.
