About the museum

The Gemeentelijk Museum van Melle came into being on the initiative of the local history association De Gonde, which had been carrying out historical research into Melle and the surrounding area since the summer of 1971. In 1973 the municipal government made a first room available for the archaeological finds and local history objects. The museum later grew into a museum with an archive and a documentation centre, run by volunteers of Erfgoed De Gonde vzw.

The museum consists of several sections. The local history room shows furniture and everyday objects, mainly from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The archaeology section mainly holds late medieval pottery from excavations in the 1970s and 1980s, with as its highlight a ceramic horse and rider statuette about one metre high, probably dating from the 13th century. Another section is devoted to the Melle sculptor Jules Vits (1868-1935), of whom the museum owns more than 130 maquettes and models, including designs for war memorials. Part of the former arrow-making workshop of the Gyselinck family can also be seen there.

Since the merger, Melle has been part of Merelbeke-Melle. According to the website of the Erfgoedpunt, the museum is currently temporarily inaccessible.
