About the museum

The Guynemerpaviljoen opened on 17 March 2018, one hundred years after the death of the French pilot Georges Guynemer. Guynemer, nicknamed “the legendary”, disappeared over Poelkapelle on 11 September 1917 and became a national hero in France. Since 1923 a large monument with a stork in his honour has stood in the centre of the village, one of the largest monuments to a single person from the First World War in the Ypres Salient. The pavilion lies close to that monument.

The exhibition tells how Guynemer grew into the hero of the French air force. Information panels, multimedia and a cinema room give an impression of his life and of his aircraft, from the Morane-Saulnier to the SPAD. His opponents and allies also receive attention, such as the chivalrous encounter with the German pilot Udet.

A second theme is the rapid growth of aviation during the war: technology and tactics changed at lightning speed. The highlight is a replica of the Morane-Saulnier L, built by students of the VTI in Ieper. The museum is run by VOF Guynemer; the partner Chocolat Nanny offers handmade pralines there and guided praline workshops.
