Heem- en Sigarenmakersmuseum

Local history centre of the Als Ice Can local history society, with a renovated museum on the history, well-known residents and cigar industry of Arendonk.

Opening hoursAdmission €3

About the museum

The first local history museum of Arendonk was located in the attic of Huis Deroissart, now part of the town hall. Provincial governor Andries Kinsbergen opened it on 28 March 1983. Because the collection kept growing, and cigar factories also wanted to donate their machines, the museum moved at the end of the 1990s into converted sheds. In 2017 and 2018 the exhibition space was completely renewed, thanks to many volunteers and the support of the municipality, the province of Antwerp and Erfgoed Noorderkempen.

The exhibition is designed as a walk-through layout in which you wander freely; coloured lines on the floor show theme routes. Alongside objects and photos there are video projections, and with the Erfgoedapp you can watch short films and listen to audio fragments on your smartphone or tablet.

Three themes are central. Arendonk history and customs covers, among other things, falconry and the Sinte Katrienazingen singing tradition. Well-known residents such as Louis Van Gorp, Rik Van Steenbergen and Remi Lens each have their own stand. The cigar industry presents more than twelve manufacturers with their materials and a reconstructed authentic cigar shop.
