About the museum
The museum is an initiative of the Heemkundige Kring Heppen (Heppen local history society), founded in 1981. In 1991 the society was given the upper floor of Heppen's former town hall, where it set up a first museum. When the municipality needed the building for childcare in 1998, the society moved to the outbuildings of the presbytery, where the old stable, the veranda and the garage were converted into functional spaces. That new museum was inaugurated on 15 April 2000.
After a thorough renovation, the museum reopened its doors on 10 March 2024 in the side wing of the former presbytery. It shows panels on the history of Heppen, historical photos of buildings and places in poster format, photo albums to leaf through, old tools and everyday objects, and an archive of books and documents. Temporary exhibitions are shown in a separate small room.
Heppen was a hamlet of Beverlo until 1850 and is today part of Leopoldsburg. Alongside the museum, the society publishes the members' magazine De Heikapper and works to preserve the Heppen dialect.
