About the museum

The museum is housed in the old military hospital of the Kamp van Beverlo, dating from 1850. It shows the origins and development of the military camp and of the municipality of Leopoldsburg, with models, documents, photographs, weapons, uniforms and everyday objects. The two world wars, the Cold War and the overseas operations of the Belgian armed forces (Defensie) after the war are also covered.

In 1834, King Leopold I had the Grote Heide of Beverlo explored with a view to building a military camp there, close to the border because of the war with the Netherlands. Parliament gave its approval in 1835. On the eve of the First World War, it was the largest and most modern camp in Europe. In October 1914 the Germans settled there.

The collection is spread over four former hospital wards and a 175-metre connecting corridor. The hospital consisted of pavilions around a central courtyard and was considered the first of its kind in Europe; it was expanded in 1913 and had an innovative ventilation system.
