About the museum
The Trinkhall museum opened its doors on 18 June 2020 and succeeds the MADmusée. It houses a collection unique in the world of works created in workshop settings by artists with intellectual disabilities, cognitive impairments or great psychosocial fragility. More than four thousand pieces — paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures — from all over the world were gathered over some forty years under the banner of the Créahm, the MADmusée and then the Trinkhall.
The Créahm, an association founded in Liège in 1979 by Luc Boulangé, runs creative workshops led by practitioners of visual and performing arts, with an artistic rather than therapeutic approach. During the years of preparation for the new museum (2017-2020), the team rethought the scientific and cultural project: rather than presenting the collection under the label of art brut, the museum places the workshop and the collective creative process at the centre.
The building, designed by the Beguin-Massart office, is covered with an opaline mesh with rounded contours and sits like a lantern in the Avroy park. It offers more than 600 m² of exhibition space, a bookshop-boutique, a documentation centre, a meeting and educational space, and a café-restaurant whose terrace opens onto the park. The permanent exhibition is renewed by themes, such as “Altérités” in 2026-2027.
