About the museum
The present Molen van Hoeke is a stone ground-mill built in 1840. The mill's origins go back much further: a wooden post mill already stood here in 1481, and according to some sources grinding took place here as early as 1324. In 1936 the Belgian state bought the mill and protected it; because the monument was then in poor condition, it was put out of operation.
After two restoration campaigns the mill was working again in 1985 and once more had a miller. It is a Flemish brick mill on an earthen mill mound that can be operated from the ground. On the grinding floor, the stone floor, the slate floor and the cap floor you can see how the milling works, with two pairs of millstones, one for animal feed and one for bread flour.
Today Herita manages the mill. The miller guides you round, shows the milling process and sells craft (wholemeal) flour. On the first and third Sunday of the month, and depending on the wind also on other days, you can visit the mill while it is turning.
