About the museum
The Musée d’Art spontané is a small, atypical museum in Schaerbeek, opposite the Halles de Schaerbeek. Through solo exhibitions, group shows, retrospectives and publications, it presents the forms of expression of self-taught artists from naïve art and art brut.
The permanent collection, both cosmopolitan and distinctive, brings together paintings, sculptures, drawings and photographs. Its works are often spontaneous, sometimes made without artistic training or any explicit intention of creating art, by people from very diverse backgrounds: workers, librarians, information specialists, care assistants, lawyers. The reserves hold more than 1,700 works by some 300 artists working outside the academic circuit.
After a period of transition, the museum has reopened with the ambition of moving from a collection that is kept to a living collection. It aims to be a social and digital laboratory: podcasts, video clips, video games and immersive displays make the works accessible and invite every visitor to take part. The museum welcomes many schools and is a member of the Brussels Museums federation and the museumPASSmusées network.
