About the museum
The Chinamuseum belongs to the mission house of the Scheut Missionaries in Anderlecht. The congregation was founded in 1862 as the Belgian Mission to China, and in 1865 the first four priests left Brussels for Inner Mongolia. The objects that the missionaries brought back from there formed the basis of the collection.
The collection showed, among other things, Chinese language and script with old coins, daily life in China and Mongolia, popular belief and the major religions (Confucianism, Taoism, Lamaism and Buddhism), and the spread of Christianity in China. A gallery also contained more than 3,000 portraits of missionaries.
In recent years the mother house of the Scheutists has been thoroughly renovated. At the same time it was decided to completely rethink the former Chinamuseum. Together with the Sisters of De Jacht, the Scheutists are developing the Erfgoedhuis Scheut, in which the collections of both congregations are to be brought together as one whole. According to the congregation, the infrastructure is almost ready, but no opening date has yet been announced.
