Musée bruxellois de la Gueuze

Family-run Cantillon brewery in Anderlecht, housing the Musée bruxellois de la Gueuze: a visit to the lambic brewery and a tasting of three beers.

Opening hoursAdmission €9

About the museum

The Cantillon brewery was founded in 1900 in the Cureghem district of Anderlecht, at a time when every Brussels neighbourhood still had its own brewery. It is today the last lambic brewery in Brussels. The Van Roy-Cantillon family continues the traditional methods: beers, tools, machines and production processes are of the period, with copper vats, barrels sometimes more than a century old, and walls of bottles.

In the 1970s small family breweries were disappearing one after another in favour of industrial production, and genuine spontaneously fermented gueuze was under threat. In 1978 Jean-Pierre Van Roy founded, with a few friends, the association Musée bruxellois de la Gueuze, with the aim of preventing the brewery’s disappearance and making this know-how better known.

The visit shows how lambic is brewed, aged in oak casks and spontaneously fermented, and how gueuze, kriek (cherry) and framboise (raspberry) are made. Depending on the season, you may see a brewing, a bottling or the preparation of fruit beers. The brewery buildings and the director’s house have been listed in the architectural heritage inventory of the Brussels-Capital Region since 2024.
