About the museum

The idea of a small folklore museum attached to a municipal library arose in the 1930s with Léon Maes. The war delayed the project: the first Musée de Folklore de Mouscron was opened on 26 September 1954 in the former Café du Centre, with about 986 objects. After the death of Léon Maes in 1956, Georges Vandermeulen took up the torch and encouraged residents to empty their attics to enrich the collections.

In 1978 the premises were allocated to the extension of the police station, and the museum moved to rue des Brasseurs, into the former house of the head teacher of the Centre municipal school; it reopened there on 25 October 1980. Recognised and subsidised by the Communauté française since 2008, it launched in 2010, with the cellule architecture of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, a project for new facilities. Work began in August 2014 and the new building was inaugurated on 21 September 2019.

Designed by the teams of V+ (architecture) and Projectiles (museography), the complex received the Grand Prix d'architecture de Wallonie and the Ianchelevici triennial prize in 2019, then the MOP prize in 2020; it was also nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award (2019) and the Prix européen du musée de l'année (2024). The route evokes working-class and middle-class life, trades, estaminets and smuggling on either side of the border, textile know-how and festive traditions, around a landscaped garden and a documentation centre.
