About the museum
Hector Van Windekens, a postal tax collector in Warneton, began making beer after marrying Hortense, from a family of brewers. According to the tourism website, the beer “ La Poste ” was born in 1853, and three generations of Van Windekens brewers succeeded one another until production stopped in 1976.
The heir then transferred the site to the Société d’Histoire de Comines-Warneton on condition that it become a museum. The Musée de la Brasserie opened its doors in 2009, on the banks of the Lys, near the RAVeL towpath and a boating halt.
The guided tour immerses visitors in the atmosphere of a village brewery: the original copper and equipment show all the stages of beer-making over three floors, from mashing to fermentation, from the fourquet (the tool used to stir the mash) to mechanical methods. An adjoining café serves drinks, and a micro-brewery produces beer again on a small scale on site.
