About the museum

Founded in 1968, the Musée de la Porte occupies the main building of a former farm in Spanish style, the Ferme de la Porte, which dates from the mid-17th century. The building was renovated between 2007 and 2009 and new rooms were fitted out to welcome visitors. The museum is run by the Office du Tourisme de la Ville de Tubize (Tourist Office of the Town of Tubize).

The collections tell the story of Tubize and its region, from prehistory to 1900. In the cellars, a partial reconstruction of a Neolithic dwelling and flint tools evoke the local prehistory, with a life-size Neanderthal woman at the entrance. The Gallo-Roman section brings together objects from the excavations of the vicus of Liberchies and a coin hoard found in Tubize.

Other rooms are devoted to the industrial past of the town, in particular the Forges de Clabecq, as well as to the locomotive workshops and to artificial silk. Beneath the 17th-century roof framework of the attic, the room of the Trésors d'art du doyenné de Tubize (Art Treasures of the Tubize Deanery) presents sculptures, goldsmiths' work, liturgical ornaments and reliquaries. One room hosts temporary exhibitions.
