About the museum
The bell museum is located in the 71-metre-high tower of the Sint-Martinusbasiliek in Halle. The tower has four storeys and four octagonal corner turrets; the first two storeys date from before 1400, the third and fourth from around 1470. The bell museum is set up on the first floor, while the second floor houses the clock room with various mechanisms.
On the third floor hangs the carillon of 54 bells. The fourth floor was the residence of the tower keeper: since December 2006 Halle has again had an official city tower keeper, the only one in Flanders. During the Second World War, sexton Gustaaf Desmet made sure that the German occupiers did not take the bells away for reuse.
Visitors only encounter the bell museum as part of a guided tour of the basilica, together with the church loft and the panorama from the tower, or during the open tower days. The tower itself is not wheelchair-accessible.
