About the museum
The Musée de la Vie d'Autrefois et du Tarare, in Racour (Lincent), in the heart of Hesbaye, has since 1995 presented everyday life in the region as it was a hundred years ago. Housed in the former town hall, it comprises eight rooms: the village's former estaminet (the Café Simone), the kitchen of Alphonse and Clémentine with its utensils for cooking, baking bread and doing the laundry, the school of the past with its wooden benches and slates, a room devoted to work in the fields with horses and oxen, the craftsmen's room with its workbench, a shop, the world of the pharmacy and the large tarare room.
The tarare is a machine used to clean grain after threshing; it was made in the former Racour factory, which was well known at the time. The renovated building also has an exhibition room showcasing artists from the region. Adapted tours and a hands-on workshop, “du grain au pain” (“from grain to bread”), are offered to schools.
