About the museum
The grain watermill of Rufferdinge is named after a Frankish baron called Ruffert and is already mentioned in the thirteenth century. The mill worked until 1966; until 1924 beer was also brewed here. Next to the mill building stands the miller’s house, a former villa built between 1872 and 1877. In 1973 the Province of Brabant bought the 2.5-hectare estate and had the mill restored; in 2003 the city of Landen bought the mill building.
A visitor centre with a tourist desk opened here in 2006. Twelve years later the city converted the building into an experience centre with farming, technology and water power as its central themes. The fully preserved milling equipment can be seen here, and anyone who wishes can play the educational game Sabotage in the mill of Rufferdinge, in which you solve a break-in and discover how the mill and its gears work.
On the ground floor you will also find the treasure room of the heritage association Pepijn@Landen. There you meet Pepijn van Landen and, with maps, diagrams and models, get an overview of the history of Landen, supplemented by objects excavated from the soil of Landen. The centre is also the starting point for several walking and cycling routes through the city.
