About the museum

The museum occupies the tram depot on avenue de Tervueren, built for the line opened in May 1897 to the World Exhibition. The avenue itself was laid out in 1896-1897 to plans by Victor Besme. The depot, taken over in 1899 by the Tramways Bruxellois, was greatly enlarged in 1907-1908. The site has been listed as a historic monument by the Brussels-Capital Region since 29 November 2001.

In September 1976 the first two sheds were decommissioned and converted into exhibition halls, and the first exhibitions opened in June 1977. In 1982 STIB entrusted the management of the museum to the non-profit association MTUB, founded by enthusiasts. This entirely volunteer association maintains and restores the historic vehicles and runs them. The site was completely renovated from 2006 to 2009.

The collection brings together trams and buses that ran on the streets of Brussels for more than a century. Part of the depot is still used by STIB, which houses around thirty trams for lines 8, 39 and 44 there.
