About the museum
The Expérimentarium de Physique of the Université libre de Bruxelles was created in 1996 on the initiative of Professor Albert Art. Its mission is to make physics accessible, lively and fun for a wide audience, without formalism or complex equations. It has been part of the ULB Museums Network since 2003 and is located on the Plaine campus.
The museum brings together a large collection of hands-on demonstrations on mechanics, electrostatics, electromagnetism, optics, waves and heat. Visitors go through them with a guide, a physicist, educator or science student, who answers questions such as how a rainbow works or what happens to the air in a vacuum tube.
The Expérimentarium also holds the physics collections of the ULB and displays several historic instruments, some of which still work and are used in demonstrations. Every January it organises, together with the Expérimentarium de Chimie, a theatrical science show in the Pleyel hall on the Solbosch campus. It welcomes around 5,500 visitors a year, mainly pupils and students.
