About the museum

The Musée Hergé opened its doors in 2009 in Louvain-la-Neuve, in Walloon Brabant, to present the life and work of Georges Remi, known as Hergé (1907-1983), the creator of Tintin. It sits on the edge of the Parc de la Source and holds hundreds of archive documents, more than 80 original panels, photographs, objects and models.

The building was designed by the architect Christian de Portzamparc. Cantilevered slightly over the road, it evokes a ship moored at the edge of a wood, and its large, irregularly cut windows recall the panels of a comic strip. The scenography is by Joost Swarte.

The visit begins on the top floor, reached by lift, and then goes down by walkways and stairs through eight rooms. They present the course of a life, the artist’s many creations, the “paper family” of characters, the influence of cinema, the scientific dimension of the work, dreams of travel, the creation of the Studios Hergé, and the author’s legacy after his death in 1983.

The museum also has a bookshop, a café-restaurant and event spaces. A sculpture of Hergé by Tom Frantzen, unveiled in 2019, stands nearby.
