Musée d'Archéologie et d'Histoire de Visé

Museum of the Société royale archéo-historique in the former Sépulcrines convent in Visé, closed for modernisation; reopening planned for 2027.

Temporarily closed
Temporarily closed (expected until 2027). The museum is closed to the public for renovation and modernisation of its scenography; the works are planned from 5 January 2026 to 31 December 2027.

About the museum

The museum is run by the Société royale archéo-historique de Visé (SRAHV), founded in 1921, which has looked after the heritage of the Lower Meuse for more than a century. It is housed at the heart of the Visé Cultural Centre, in the former Sépulcrines convent, a building in Mosan Renaissance style rebuilt after the First World War.

The collections bring together archaeological objects, photographs and archive documents linked to the history of the region. The trail comprised four spaces: an archaeology gallery, an architecture gallery, a gallery devoted to cultural heritage (fine arts and folklore) and an arms room. The society also organises lectures, excursions and publications every year, and runs a historical documentation centre.

Since the beginning of 2026, the museum has been undergoing modernisation. The City of Visé is renovating the building (floors, electrics, security, a new entrance for people with reduced mobility), while the society is selecting and restoring the key pieces, preparing a new scenography with modern display cases and digital tools, and computerising the inventory. The new interpretation centre is scheduled to open in 2027, with an inauguration at the end of the year.
