About the museum
The Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaerde in Bruges was founded in 1245 and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1998. For centuries only women lived there; today it is home to single women from Bruges and a few women with a religious vocation. The City of Bruges looks after the beguinage.
The beguine house lies to the south of the beguinage gate and is the first house you see at the entrance. It consists of a front house and a back house, which borders the Reie. The house probably dates from the 18th century with an older core. In the kitchen stands a late-Gothic chimneypiece from the 16th century, and the house was restored in 1997.
The house is laid out as a museum and shows how a beguine lived: with a kitchen, a sitting area, a dining area and a bedroom, furnished with 17th- and 18th-century furniture. A few paintings and lace are also on display.
