About the museum
Museum De Kelder is a regional museum in the cellar of the town hall on the Markt in Tessenderlo-Ham. The Loois Archief- en Documentatiecentrum (LAD, Loois Archive and Documentation Centre) and the archaeological association TESTA vzw invite visitors to discover the history of Tessenderlo here, in the local dialect ’t Looi.
A permanent display of showcases in the exhibition room tells the history of the region from around 80,000 BC up to the 21st century, with the ordinary person as the starting point. The oldest archaeological objects date from that period. There are also medieval tableware, glassware, memories of the Second World War and objects relating to the explosion disaster of 1942.
The middle room of the cellar is used for lectures and guided visits for schools and groups. A third part is the archive and work space, with cupboards full of archives, population registers and microfilm readers, where genealogical researchers can get to work.
