About the museum
Jan Vaerten was born in Turnhout in 1909 and lived in Beerse from 1942. He died in 1980 in his native town. His breakthrough came in 1947 with a first major exhibition at the Paleis voor Schone Kunsten (Palace of Fine Arts) in Brussels; in 1948 and 1952 he was represented at the Venice Biennale and the São Paulo Biennial. His work is counted among symbolism and revolves around one great theme: human lack, the struggle between matter and spirit.
In 1988, the museum with works by the artist opened in Beerse. It owns about 150 works by Vaerten; the works on display change, and a few guest exhibitions are held each year.
