About the museum
Since September 2022 the local history museum of Rijkevorsel has been housed in the community centre of Sint-Jozef, in a historic building on Kerkdreef. The Aster Berkhof Museum was previously housed on the same site. The museum is run by the Heemkundige Kring van Rijkevorsel (local history society).
On the first floor, which you reach by lift, you see pictures of vanished houses, groups, people and events from the village, a little shop from the 1950s, a hairdresser’s, a small classroom and displays about the war. The restored pottery from the castle moat, excavated in 1978 and 1979, is also part of the collection.
In the spacious attic, reached by stairs, you find the other excavation finds and an overview of crafts and trades: the guilds, the baker, the blacksmith, the joiner, the bicycle maker, the plumber, the shoemaker, the clog maker, agriculture, hunting, the diamond cutter and the brickworks, supplemented by the doctor, pharmacist, dentist and clothing of the past. A film shows farm life between the two world wars. Next to the museum, the society has a documentation centre with, among other things, parish registers, civil registers up to 1910 and a reconstruction of the population from 1800 to 1945.
