About the museum
Museum Oud-Vredegerecht (Former Justice of the Peace Court Museum) is the second local history museum of the De Kluize local history society, alongside the museum in the former town hall of Sint-Pauwels. It is housed in the former justice of the peace court on the Kerkstraat in Sint-Gillis-Waas, where the society also has its address.
The society was founded in 1984 and named itself after the hermit Geerwijn, who built a hermitage (kluis) and a chapel in this region at the beginning of the twelfth century. The society publishes the journal “de kluizenaer” (the hermit).
The photo collection numbers more than 25,000 digitised photos, the oldest from 1890. In addition, the society keeps newspaper clippings, texts and documents that illustrate local history. In the museum, visitors can take part in a quiz.
