About the museum
Museum Oud-Gemeentehuis (Former Town Hall Museum) is one of the two local history museums of the De Kluize local history society. It is housed in the former town hall of Sint-Pauwels, a sub-municipality of Sint-Gillis-Waas.
The society was founded in 1984 and took its name from the hermit Geerwijn, who built a hermitage (kluis) and a chapel in this region in the twelfth century. Its journal is called “de kluizenaer” (the hermit).
The society keeps a large photo collection of more than 25,000 digitised photos, the oldest from 1890, supplemented with newspaper clippings, texts and documents about local history. Visitors can take part in a quiz in the museum with questions about what is on display.
