About the museum
Museum to Scale 1/7 is a permanent mini-museum on the City Campus of the University of Antwerp. The idea came from gallery owner Ronny Van de Velde. Together with the artists involved, his gallery developed the project into a series of miniature rooms, in each of which a different Belgian artist created their own little museum room at a scale of 1/7.
The series was previously shown at, among other places, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels, the Baker Museum in Naples (Florida), the Kunsthal in Rotterdam and the Fondazione Ghisla in Locarno. In 2019 the university's Art on Campus committee acquired the collection, which has since had a permanent place in Building R. Later the route was extended to the first floor.
The museum is a contemporary version of a wunderkammer, or cabinet of curiosities: everything from painting to full installation is set out in miniature, and the relationship between scale, idea and execution plays a role each time. More than a hundred Belgian artists took part, including Panamarenko, Frank Maieu, Dan Van Severen, Etienne Van Doorslaer, Mark Verstockt, Camiel Van Breedam and Guy Vandenbranden. For six works there is an inclusive audio guide, which you open with a QR code under the work.
