About the museum
In the early 1990s the Walloon Region and Europe decided to transform the former Crachet-Picquery coal mine, in the heart of the Borinage, into a centre dedicated to scientific, technical and industrial culture. Coal was mined there from the 13th century, first on a small scale and then industrially until the final closure in 1960. The 64-metre metal pulley headframe, the engine room and the belvedere, modernised after the Second World War, were listed in 1989.
The French architect Jean Nouvel, chosen in 1997 after a European call for projects, was entrusted with the urban planning and rehabilitation of the wasteland. He integrated the industrial buildings of the 1950s into a modern ensemble served by a 210-metre footbridge, a nod to how the former mine worked; Laurent Niget then continued the construction programme.
The Parc d'aventures scientifiques et de société (PASS) opened in May 2000 thanks to European Objective 1 Hainaut funds. In 2021 it took the name SPARKOH!, combining “Science Park”, the spark of knowledge and the visitors' “oh!” of wonder. Today the site offers sixteen interactive exhibitions, an indoor acrobatic course, an outdoor play area of 3,000 m², a biodiversity garden, a 4D cinema and free access to the Mont Ostène slag heap.
