About the museum
The Rohardushof in Beveren aan de IJzer (municipality of Alveringem) houses an archaeological pottery museum. The collection lets visitors follow the evolution of pottery, from the first known settlements to the end of the 19th century. Many objects were excavated or found in Poperinge, Alveringem and the surrounding area and give a picture of everyday life in the past.
Attention goes to Flemish pottery, Flemish hearth tiles, stoneware, puntneuzen (pointed-nose jugs) and bearded jugs. The bearded jugs were made from the 16th century in the German Rhineland and turn up almost everywhere in archaeological digs. The museum owns, among other things, seven face jugs, the smallest only 5 cm high.
Pottery making once flourished in Alveringem and Poperinge, and the collection draws on that history. During a guided tour, the explanation is tailored to the questions of the visitors. The museum says a visit is suitable for all ages.
