About the museum
Roosenberg Abbey in Waasmunster has a history going back to the thirteenth century. The abbey’s emblem, Mary with the child and three roses, already appears on a seal of 1353. In the sixteenth century, during the iconoclasm, and again at the end of the eighteenth century, during the French occupation, the abbey buildings were looted and destroyed; each time the sisters returned and started again. In 1971 the Victorine sisters of the abbey merged with the Marian Sisters of Franciscus, and a new abbey, designed by Dom Hans van der Laan, was built at the Oudeheerweg-Heide.
In 2016 the last sisters left the abbey buildings and the abbey museum closed. The pieces were then spread across three locations: the convent of the Marian Sisters on Kerkstraat, the abbey itself and a municipal storage depot, and were not accessible to the public. At the end of 2021, Willy Brône, founder of the Friends of Roosenberg Abbey, proposed making a side aisle of the Church of Our Lady available for a new museum. After a year and a half of consultation with the parish council, the diocese, heritage bodies and dozens of volunteers, the Roosenberg Museum opened on 26 March 2023.
The collection illustrates almost eight hundred years of abbey history: old documents, furniture, paintings, sculptures, coats of arms and liturgical objects. Since 2023 the abbey itself has been managed by Herita and has its own visiting arrangements; the museum in the church is a separate visit.
