About the museum
Edgar Tinel was born in Sinaai in 1854 and grew into one of the great Belgian composers and pianists. He won the Prix de Rome in 1877, led the school of church music in Mechelen from 1881, became director of the Brussels conservatoire in 1909 and was the last court Kapellmeister to the King. He died in 1912.
Shortly after his death a committee was formed that raised money for a tomb monument and collected memories of him. At the unveiling of the tomb monument during the Tinel Festivities in 1931 there was already enough material for a small exhibition; it was put away again after each festival. In 1963 two rooms on the ground floor of the birthplace became available, so that the collection could be shown there permanently.
In 1976 the committee received a legal status as the Tinelmuseum vzw. The present museum was inaugurated on 17 October 1992 on the first floor of the birthplace. It shows documents and memories of Tinel; many archive items are not in the room but can be consulted online via the association's online archive. The association also regularly organises concerts in Sinaai.
