About the museum
The Ryckewaertshof is an old farmstead that the Benedictines of Saint-Riquier had built in the thirteenth or fourteenth century. The monks of the French abbey also founded a priory in Bredene-Dorp in 1087. In 1980 the municipality of Bredene bought the building and, after a thorough renovation, it was given the function of a cultural centre. An outbuilding from the early twenty-first century is the home of the secular humanist association De Fakkel.
The painter Anto Diez (1914-1992), of Spanish descent and the first honorary citizen of Bredene, gave the municipality a large collection of paintings. It is permanently displayed in the Ryckewaertshof, which gave the building its second name. His work is counted among Flemish expressionism, with rich forms and expressive force.
On the grounds stand various sculptures, among them works by André Huyghebaert (land art), Philippe Vermeulen, Eddy Walrave and Roger Bracke. From time to time temporary exhibitions and concerts also take place.
