About the museum
The Turkeyenhof is a restored polder farm from 1737 in classical style, with a bedroom above the cellar, an attic loft and a bakehouse. The museum farm consists of a farmhouse, bakehouse, barn, wagon shed and dog kennel. For the local history society (heemkring) Ter Cuere, it serves as their heritage house, with a meeting room, library, museum attic, exhibition space and a nostalgic little café.
The society wants to preserve history and local heritage with objects and tools from old trades. On the farm you can see everyday objects and tools used by, among others, the clog maker, shoemaker, carpenter, blacksmith and plumber, supplemented by Gallo-Roman finds, photos and posters about the past of Bredene.
A second section is the shell museum, with North Sea shells that have been identified and named, and with material fished up from the Dogger Bank area, such as mammoth bones and a mammoth tooth. The society's documentation centre holds old maps, photos and books about Bredene and the surrounding area.
