About the museum
The village of Recht was shaped by the quarrying and processing of the Rechter Blaustein from the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century. For a long time the slate was extracted in open-air quarries. In 1890 the Margraff brothers from Recht decided to dig a lower gallery next to the upper one.
This lower gallery was reopened in 2007 by the association Schieferstollen Recht and has since served as a visitor mine. Over a distance of 800 metres, visitors get to know large, impressive extraction halls, the regional geology and the hard, dangerous work of the miners. Guided tours are possible in German, French, Dutch and English.
In 2016 a Blaustein museum was added to the mine. It displays products and tools made from Rechter Blaustein, grouped into objects from the sacred sphere, domestic use and construction, including grave crosses, a sink and a lintel. All exhibits are labelled in four languages. The administration lies with the Autonome Gemeinderegie (autonomous municipal administration) of the town of Sankt Vith.
