About the museum

The Godelievemuseum is located on the grounds of Ten Putte Abbey in Gistel, on the spot where, according to tradition, Saint Godelieve was murdered around 1070. Around 1100 a Benedictine abbey for nuns was founded here. In 1578 it was destroyed by the Geuzen, and the sisters moved to Bruges. In 1891 they returned to Gistel and moved into a new neo-Gothic convent designed by architect Jean Baptiste Bethune.

Since 2007 the community Moeder van Vrede has lived in the abbey. The museum, run by a non-profit association (vzw), tells the story of Godelieve, the veneration of the Gistel saint and the history of the abbey. A short film provides historical context in the display cases. The highlights include the tombstone of abbess Godelieve Payers from 1553, an 18th-century miracle painting of the Seamless Shirt, the Godelievetafel (a 16th-century triptych), the blood stones and a stained-glass window with Godelieve from the neo-Gothic abbey church (circa 1891).
